According to 2012 AIA survey of 2,805 member firms, 49% of architecture students, 39% of interns and 17% of firm principals/partners are women. This lecture seeks to increase the 22% gap from intern to principal by providing key tools for business development. Whether it’s a sole proprietor or forming partnerships, there’s a point in one’s career where entrepreneurship is the best step forward.

OBJECTIVES: 

  1. Identify potential challenges of climbing the ladder from intern to principal and examples of overcoming them
  2. Identify advantages of registering your business as a WBE (Women Business Enterprise)
  3. Identify how to leverage that certification to obtain the various contracts available within Washington Metropolitan area
  4. Identify branding design strategies, marketing and client relationships as key tools in business development
  5. Identify advantages to use legal counsel as part of business development

Amy is an associate in Gensler’s Washington, DC office and is an integral part of brand strategy and development. With more than a decade of marketing consulting experience, Amy believes in the power of branding to transform companies. As a brand strategist, she works with clients and key stakeholders to create and maintain a brand’s identity over the long term. She helps clients realize their company’s brand in the built environment and leads multi-disciplinary teams to bring design thinking to every project.

Deanna Francl  |  LEED AP

Deanna is a principal in Gensler’s Washington, DC office and a leader of the firm’s brand design practice. She is an integral part of brand strategy and development, including preparation, research, and facilitation of visioning sessions.  Relying on unique marketing and business insights developed over her 16-year career, she helps clients realize their company’s brand in the built environment—using design thinking to develop key messaging, brand positioning, and project strategies. Deanna’s user-centric approach creates lasting client relationships and meaningful partnerships that allow projects to expand beyond their original scopes and grow into new opportunities.

Paola Moya  |  Associate AIA, NOMA

Paola, principal of Marshall Moya Design, is actively involved in the design, development, and successful completion of each of the firm’s projects. Moya also manages the Marshall Moya Design team, cultivates new business opportunities, oversees the firm’s daily business operations, and leads the firm’s strategic planning. Moya has been featured on a variety of local, national, and international media including CNN Español: Juan Carlos Lopez’s segment Latino in America and leading a CNN tour of the Howard Theatre, Telemundo, Caracol Television and Radio (Colombian National Broadcast), NPR’s Tell Me More, FOX News Latino, Radio America, The Washington Post, The Washington Post Express, The Washington Examiner, WPFW 89.3 FM, .NET International Magazine, and Modern Luxury Magazine. Moya received a Master’s degree in Architecture with a Real Estate Development concentration from The Catholic University of America (CUA). She also earned a Finance certification from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania’s Executive Education program and an Associate’s degree in Architecture from Montgomery College in Maryland. Moya was born in Bogota, Colombia where she is also licensed as an architect.

Jerry Alfonso Miles  |  ESQ

Jerry assists companies in complying with federal acquisition regulations, mitigating proposal risks, protesting bids, defending against government investigations, completing mergers and acquisitions, responding to government auditors, and resolving prime and subcontractor disputes. After working with the American Society of International Law (ASIL), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and a downtown law firm, Mr. Miles spent four years as corporate counsel for Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR), working on matters at the forefront of international and government contract law. Mr. Miles then worked at a large, regional law firm in that firm’s government contracting, international and construction practices. As a past Chair of the Federal Bar Association’s Government Contracts Section and an active member of the international procurement bar, Mr. Miles regularly speaks on international procurement matters. He also involved in several charitable and philanthropic associations, including the American Heart Associations’ Pulse Lawyers Have Heart and McKissack’s ACE Mentor Program.

Sandra Eberhard  |  Executive Director for the Women President’s Educational Organization, Washington Chapter

Prior to joining WPEO-DC in March, Sandra worked in Corporate America. As the Asset Manager for Aetna Healthcare’s northeast region she managed all leased/owned facilities and administrative sales shared service operations in the Northeast. As an advocate for women’s issues she has been a member of the New York Women’s Agenda, a coalition of women’s organizations, affiliated with over 100 organizations in New York City, dedicated to improving the lives of women and their families. A member since 1998, she served as President 2006-2008 as an active advocate for women’s economic empowerment. Other social commitments include acting in the capacity as an advocate for survivors of violent crimes against women. Sandra’s formal education includes a BA from SUNY Potsdam as a licensed a Math Teacher K-12; Project Manager Certification from Boston University Corporate training program; Quality Improvement and six sigma training and specialist in HR.
